Good Friday: An Ending That Led to a New Beginning

Updated: Apr 19, 2020

It's Good Friday!

Every new beginning has a corresponding ending. A couple thousand years ago, Jesus was arrested by the authorities, beaten, and nailed to a cross. He willingly died to make a way for us to be reconciled to God.

Jesus’ disciples were thrown into tremendous grief at the sudden loss of their leader and their crushed dreams of a better life. Their confusion must've been paralyzing: Was Jesus the Messiah? Are we about to be arrested and killed, too? What are we supposed to do next? Where are you, God?!

Their agony lasted from 3 pm Friday until the empty tomb was discovered early Sunday morning. Although they experienced the end of so many things, their new beginnings helped them to focus on what came next.

It's a palpable paradox for all of us: what have you seen end, even temporarily, in your life while simultaneously embracing new beginnings in this whole new world? And what is the source of your hope? Better yet, Who is the source of your hope?

"Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying." Romans 12:12
